ARC Review: “The Bird and the Blade” by Megan Bannen

Very rarely do I give any book a 1-star rating. I think I don’t even give 1 stars to books I dislike and DNF. Now this one I finished and still gave a 1 star to, which is really telling for me as a reader. Truthfully, I had high hopes for this book, but everything slowly unraveled to become a book I will not recommend to others.

TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide — This trigger warning is a spoiler for the book. With that being said, please know that from this point forward, my review will not be spoiler-free.

T5W: Summer Vacation Books

Technically, today’s Top 5 Wednesday post is supposed to be about books that feature road trips, but to be honest, I can’t really think of a lot that fit the topic. Instead I decided to feature books that take place during summer vacation in general.

Today’s my last week of summer vacation. Next week I hit the ground running at work after 4 weeks off! I figured it’s a good way to reminisce about my own time off. 🙂

You can join the Top 5 Wednesday group over on Goodreads, check out others’ posts, and wait for August’s topics!

ARC Review: “Smoke in the Sun” by Renée Ahdieh

I was thrilled to pick up an ARC of this book while at NTTBF back in April. Funny enough, I picked up an ARC of Flame in the Mist just the year before, too. What a coincidence!

Anyway, I reread FitM before diving into its sequel, and I’m really glad I did. I’ve been rereading a lot of books this year due to sequels (*coughReaperattheGatescough*) or finales releasing (*coughWarStormcough*). I’ve quite enjoyed it because I’ve seriously forgotten so much! And since I never did read a finished copy of Flame in the Mist, I really felt like I was going into the book like it were brand new.

Review: “The Cruel Prince” by Holly Black

As promised in yesterday’s post, I decided to write up a review for The Cruel Prince. It’s one of my most recent reads, and is still (fairly) fresh in my brain. I have a deep hesitancy starting books that are completely hyped and loved by hundreds, if not thousands, of readers. Black is an incredibly popular author, and while I read one of her books 12+ years ago I don’t remember much about it or whether or not I even liked it. So diving into TCP provided similar excitement of reading a debut author.

TRIGGER WARNING: Physical and verbal abuse; suicide (of a non-essential character)

Goodreads Reading Challenge: Jan – June ’18

Last week in a Top 5 Wednesday post, I talked about some of my top-rated books of the year so far. With the year officially being half-way over, I figured I’d give an update of how my Goodreads reading challenge is going so far.

I started off with the goal to read 90 books, but with the way I was feeling mentally and creatively, coupled with the desire to reread some books since sequels and finales were releasing, I cut my goal down to 80. Goodreads says one thing, but because I have DNFed one book and read a short novella that I don’t really count as a “book,” I’ve actually read 2 less than my current stat of 49.

ARC Review: “I Really Didn’t Think This Through” by Beth Evans

I’m going to give myself a pat on the back for blogging consecutively for the past few days. 🙂 *pat pat, pat pat* I have a small stack of ARCs that I had planned to read a while… Alas, that didn’t happen. But since I’m on summer break, I hope to catch up.

This book was sent to me by the author. Thank you, Beth! All quotes are taken directly from the ARC and may change in the final copy.

ARC Review: “The Smoke Thieves” by Sally Green

Pitched as “perfect for Game of Thrones fans”, I went into The Smoke Thieves with relative ease. I’ve never read or watched GoT, but from what I’ve heard there’s a lot of killing…and sex. Maybe some fighting? I don’t know. I hardly hear about that. Oh wait, and there’s DRAGONS.

Anywho, I picked up this ARC from the PenguinTeen booth while at the North Texas Teen Book Festival earlier this year. I had hoped to read it before the release date, but that (obviously) didn’t happen. 😛

T5W: Best Books I’ve Read (So Far) in 2018

Gosh, this means we’re actually half-way through 2018! How is that possible? I can believe it though, because it’s always 100+ degrees outside where I live. So yes, summer is NIGH and won’t disappear any time soon. 😬

To determine the best books I’ve read so far, I chose the books I rated 5 stars on Goodreads. I was going to go with 4.5 or higher, but I have more than 5 of those! But at 5 stars, there are exactly 5. Haha. The book gods are in my favor!

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly blog meme hosted over on Goodreads. You can check out the group and topics here.
