WWW Wednesday #7

The last time I wrote a WWW Wednesday post was back in April! 😱 So I figure it’s time for another one! I actually quite enjoy writing these, too.

WWW Wednesday is now hosted on Taking on a World of Words, and it’s really simple. In this post I’ll answer the following questions:

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

• What are you currently reading?

I’m on summer break and always grand ideas about how much I plan to read. The truth is, I end up reading the average amount of books I read even when I’m not on vacation. But hey, I’ve got a lot of ambition, right? 🙃 But since I do work a desk job and as I’ve mentioned this before, you’ll know that I picked up listening to audiobooks while also reading a physical book on the side.

I’m a little over half-way through with All the Crooked Saints. While I want to love it because it’s Maggie Stiefvater and because this book is magical and mystical and those elements remind me a great deal of The Raven Cycle, I’m still unsure. I’m struggling to find a plot… There’s not a solid line for me to follow, so it’s been hard. Nonetheless, the narrator for the audiobook is really good and is keeping me entertained.

Smoke in the Sun is an ARC I picked up at this year’s NTTBF back in April. I know, it’s already been released for almost a month now, but due to some creative stops and some emotional and mental drainage, I haven’t been too worried about keeping up-to-date with my reviews. Hopefully, that will all change soon, but that also means I’m still behind on a lot of ARCs, both physical and digital. Anywho, I’m enjoying SitS. I love the political and court intrigue, the undertones of magic, and the slow romance as well. I’m about 3/4 of the way through, and hope to finish it by the end of this week.

• What did you recently finish reading?

Long Way Down was a quick audiobook to listen to, clocking it at under 2 hours. It’s a novel written in verse, so it was interesting to follow along while listening. I’ve recently become an admirer of Jason Reynolds, and this is the first book I’ve read by him. He narrated this particular book (not sure if he narrates the others), and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Despite it being a short read, it’s powerful and thought-provoking, with an ending that made me go, “Wait, what?!”

I caved into the “hyped book” and picked up The Cruel Prince. I’ve heard so many great things about this, but truthfully… It didn’t live up to the hype for me. I plan to have a review up for this tomorrow, but we’ll see. It wasn’t what I thought it would be, and there was a lot of physical and verbal abuse, and a very brief suicide (of a non-essential character) that really made me raise my eyebrows. I’ve read one book by Holly Black before, but that was at least 13 or so years ago, and I don’t remember much about it. Maybe that was telling in the first place? 🤔

• What do you think you’ll read next?

To be honest, I’m not 100% sure. I checked out a bunch of books from my local library, but I also have two June ARCs glaring at me from my bookshelves. 😅 Here’s what they are:

I also have at least one July eARC and a handful of both physical and digital ARCs to read so… Yeah. I’m literally at a lost. I used to do so well by sticking to my TBR Jar but then there are just so many wonderful books out and releasing and I just really…lost it all. The Bird and the Blade is supposedly a retelling of an Italian opera called Turandot. I haven’t read beyond that because I’m afraid I might spoil something for myself. Sweet Black Waves is inspired by the romantic tale of Tristan and Eseult / Isolde and like !!! I’m sold! But also, wow, there’s probably forbidden romance or maybe some slow burn, too, so… Yeah. Again. Lost. 🙂
