Review: “From Twinkle, with Love” by Sandhya Menon

Oh. My. Gosh!!! How little did I know how much I would love this book! I mean, I really enjoyed When Dimple Met Rishi, so I went into FTwL with some sort of expectations, but it truly blew me out of the water! The audiobook was absolutely perfect!!

Usagi heart eyes

My feelings toward all of Sandhya Menon’s books.

From Twinkle With LoveTitle: From Twinkle, with Love
Author: Sandya Menon
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release date: May 22, 2018
Genre: Young adult, contemporary, romance
Length: 330 pages (hardcover)
Synopsis: (via Goodreads) “Aspiring filmmaker and wallflower Twinkle Mehra has stories she wants to tell and universes she wants to explore, if only the world would listen. So when fellow film geek Sahil Roy approaches her to direct a movie for the upcoming Summer Festival, Twinkle is all over it. The chance to publicly showcase her voice as a director? Dream come true. The fact that it gets her closer to her longtime crush, Neil Roy-a.k.a. Sahil’s twin brother? Dream come true x 2.

When mystery man N begins emailing her, Twinkle is sure it’s Neil, finally ready to begin their happily-ever-after. The only slightly inconvenient problem is that, in the course of movie-making, she’s fallen madly in love with the irresistibly adorkable Sahil.

Twinkle soon realizes that resistance is futile: The romance she’s got is not the one she’s scripted. But will it be enough?

Told through the letters Twinkle writes to her favorite female filmmakers, From Twinkle, with Love navigates big truths about friendship, family, and the unexpected places love can find you.”

new five stars

new my thoughts

plot text
Yes, you saw that right! A whole FIVE STARS to this book! I want to shove it into everyone’s hands and make them read it! I loved the entire concept of this novel, of Twinkle’s goals and her determination, but also how oblivious she was. She designates a fine line between those with and without money at her school, and she’s completely comfortable being the “wallflower.” I just found each passing chapter a joy to read and I loved Twinkle’s embarrassments and her jubilation. Also, I cried a lot when Twinkle and her mom had a deep and emotional conversation because all I kept thinking about was my mom and how it must feel for her. The story as a whole was engaging and I found it incredibly realistic in terms of how Twinkle reacted as a teen and her expectations of her friends. Also, everything with Sahil was absolutely wonderful. More on how much I love him and them together below…

Excuse me, but how adorable was Sahil? He was so considerate of Twinkle and her feelings, giving her space when she needed it, and their interactions were 100% everything in this book! Such kindness!! Also, he’s biracial! Hello! I am here for that! I found both him and Twinkle to be incredibly relatable, and really liked how Menon worked Twinkle’s broken, repaired, and growing friendships throughout this book. Both it and Twinkle’s budding romance with Sahil was a true flashback to my own teenage years (though Twinkle definitely has more motivation in the career department than I ever did). The way her feelings for Sahil slowly crept up on her… Ah! 😍 I absolutely loved how quirky Twinkle’s grandmother is, the story about Twinkle’s mother truly brought this story a little closer to home for me. Basically, can I have more books set in this universe, too?

writing style text
I absolutely love the way the story was told. I love how this is a take on an epistolary novel and that Twinkle writes to famous female movie directors as her inspiration. Menon writes so well, and it’s so easy to connect to this world and the lives of these characters. I’m probably not making any sense, but I simply adored this book. The audiobook was fantastic; the narrators great; and I definitely plan on reading Menon for as long as she writes books!

I love this book SO MUCH and you covered what I like about it so well – from the dynamic of the relationships in the book to how wonderful Sahil is to just how passionate Twinkle is about film-making and so much more. A wonderful review!
I’m so glad to find someone else who loved this book as much as I did.
